Ok I have always been puzzled by the need to refer to Canada as North America..does this piss off the Canadians, or do you just accept it. If the english referred to Scotland as Northern England, there would be outrage.
Well, the thing is that Canada and the US are in a continent called "North America". I've never heard Canada referred to as "North America" by itself... we're just Canada. Now people know absolutely NOTHING about us... but yeah..
I've never heard of Canada myself being called North America. I'm not from there, but either way, I think it'd just be weird for someone to refer to it as that. As it is, it feels weird that we call Central America Central America, when North America and South America are both contenents, while Central America is not. I say we just call Central Maerica a contenent, and then we'll have North America, Central America, And south America. *smiles*
well, somebody else already beet me to the punch but yes, North America is the continent. I can also say that I have never heard of anybody calling Canada North America when directly refering to Canada.
I have never heard of Canada being called North america when just referring to Canada either. Strange.
Goblin, the term "North America" refers to Canada and the US together.
Oh, oops, and include Mexico in that, please. :-)
Yeah, I was going to say that. *smiles* Mexico too.
Referring to the continent of North America; which includes as has been mentioned before Canada, United States and Mexico, is just like referring to the continent of Europe; which includes England, Scotland and so many more...As far as I know anyways...LOL. Never heard Canada referred to simply as North America either...
Canadians are Americans, though! And so are the people from Mexico, so ... those of us from the US aren't the only Americans! And oh yeah, can't forget about the people in Central and South America too. They're all Americans because they live in a part of America. Hee hee.
Well it's in the best interests of unity that the US and Canada become one big country with the states and provinces each been represented in the government. Then of course, the EU, Australia New Zealand, Japan and South Korea could all get in on the act and we'd have one big developed democracy and the rest of the world could go fuck itself.
Over here the media refer to Canada as N america.. And I happen to know that the majority of Canadians hate it.
Bollocks how can Canadians be american there is such thing as a BORDER which divides the 2 countrys..Canadians therefore cannot be americans..such ignorange is incredible.
"American" refers to the continent we live on; IE I live on the continent of North America therefore I'm American. *sigh*
How blinkered you are, Canada is over the border, and a far more sensible country. You yanks are terribly badly educated. Did you by any chance attend the conditioning
classes
Just exactly what newspapers is it you read goblin - I've never heard Canada being referred to as north america and I watch/listen to lots of news type programmes. Then again, they're a bit odd up there in scotland ain't they, guess maybe it's only in scotland they refer to canada as north america, in which case we excuse their ignorance cause they know no better poor lambs, lol
Yes, if you live on the continent of North America, then you should be considered American. Same goes for those who live in Central and South America, too.
Bollocks! obviously individual national identity means nothing to the self righteous eh?..I consider myself to be Scots/Italian and definately not British.
no, you're not British, but you're from the UK, aren't you?
Good ol' Goblin strikes again. First he asks an seemingly innocent question and when he doesn't get the kind of furious answers he craves for he begins attacking by calling people ignorant, badly educated, self righteous with no individual national identity (whatever that means) and people still are kind and patient with him trying to explain and help him understand. People, Goblin is not interested in understanding but in causing people to argue among them. He will try anything to achieve his goal. So, please don't be mad at me for stating the obvious. Star
Actually that's not technically true. While the schottish have a serious chip on their shoulder about being Brittish, you are Brittish whether you like it or not. Sure Scotland is a country in its own right, but Scotland is part of that island which is more commonly known as, great Britain! and the difference between scotland and Canada is that as a scottish person, you will own a Brittish passport, wheras US citizens have US passports, canadians have canadian passports ... etc.
Technically Canadian, American and Mexican citizens are all North Americans because these three countries are located on the continent of North America. Just like people from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia...etc. would be South Americans because they are all located in South America.
I'm still Scottish as the united kingdom is a fallacy. The Celtic countries of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, want freedom from the insufferable discrimination and unfair treatment we suffer daily from england.
and without the contributions from the "english" tax payers, the celtic countries wouldn't last 5 minutes.
